P010 Pioneer 1968 Ford Mustang Notchback Coupe Trans-Am Racer - Bill Maier, #22 1:32 Slot Car
Bill Maier special-ordered this car from Hayward Ford in Hayward, CA, in December 1967. It was built in San Jose, CA, on March 9, 1968, and equipped with a close ratio 4-speed Toploader transmission, power steering, heavy-duty suspension, and a 390 CID GT engine. After race preparation, Bill began the car's racing history in the San Francisco Region of the SCCA. He drove in the 1968 season's Driver's School and Regional events in the A Sedan class with a 302 CID Windsor engine.
In 1969, Bill purchased a stock Boss 302 engine directly from Holman-Moody, Inc., - Ford's racing parts supplier at that time. He raced in SF Regional and National events with this engine and garnered several podium finishes at Cotati, Sears Point, and Laguna Seca. The following year, Bill entered the Mustang in the April Trans-Am race at Laguna Seca. He then continued to race the car in Regional and National events during the rest of the season.
From 1971 to 1976 Bill raced the car with great success in SCCA events, gaining many 1st and 2nd place finishes. By the tail end of 1976, Bill decided it was time to rest the car and it was not until the early '80's that current owner Gary Goeringer first spotted the car for sale. Passing on the chance to own the car on a couple of occasions, it would be twenty years before Gary finally closed the deal to purchase the car in May 2001.
After a further period of renovations to revert to 1968 Trans-Am specifications, Car 22 was unveiled at Sears Point in 2003 where Bill Maier was able to see his old racer back on the track once more, driven this time by its new owner. Gary is a very active racer and has campaigned his car in dozens of race meetings where it continues to be a welcome and popular addition on the Historic Trans-Am circuit calendar.
