History

When in 1961 it was limited to 1500 cc. the cylinder capacity in F1, Porsche saw the opportunity to enter the premier class with a new model, which inherited very little of the Porsche 718 F2 present in the Grand Prix a couple of years ago.

In 1962 the new Porsche 804 was ready. Based on a very flat engine of 8 cylinders opposite, very light to go air-cooled by its peculiar upper fan, with 180 hp, 6-speed box, suspension by torsion bars (without springs) and efficient ventilated brake discs of the own house... was the least conventional of the F1 at the time.

Dan Gurney won the first victory at the French Grand Prix and a few weeks later in Germany before 300,000 spectators the Porsche doubled in the Solitude GP (not scoring) with Gurney first and Bonnier second ahead of Clark's Lotus. At the end of 1962 Porsche came to the conclusion that F1 technology could only be applied to the production of their cars in a small part, turning all their attention to the great GT and Resistance races, where with the new developments it obtained improvements direct to their increasingly burgeoning sports cars.
